About Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is coined the most common form of diabetes. Almost all of the food we eat contains sugar and is turned into glucose (sugar) to provide our bodies with energy. As a response to this chemical process, our pancreas makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. For people who have type 2 diabetes, their bodies cannot use their own insulin well. Thus, sugar builds up in the blood.

Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition that can lead to health issues, such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, or loss of toes, feet, or legs. This condition may begin from prediabetes.

Prediabetes refers to the increase of blood sugar level that is way beyond normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Without early interventions, this can develop into Type 2 diabetes.

Who are at risk of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes?
– People who age 45 years or older
– Those who are overweight
– Individuals who have a family history of type 2 diabetes
– People who are physically active fewer than three times per week
– Those who had diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes) or gave birth to a baby that weighed more than 9 pounds
